What Is a Re-Entry Permit?

When you hold a non-immigrant visa in Thailand (retirement, marriage, education, work, or DTV), your visa stamp is tied to your physical presence in the country. The moment you exit Thailand without a re-entry permit, that visa stamp is automatically and permanently cancelled — regardless of how many days remain.

A re-entry permit is a stamp placed in your passport by Thai Immigration that authorizes you to leave and return without cancelling your visa. It does not extend your visa or add days to your stay — it simply protects the visa you already have. It is entirely separate from your visa extension (TM7 form) and your 90-day address report. Note that when you re-enter Thailand after a trip abroad, your TM30 must also be re-filed within 24 hours.

The most common and costly mistake: Long-term residents leave Thailand for a holiday, wedding, or medical visit — without a re-entry permit — and return to find their visa is cancelled. They must re-apply for a new visa from their home country, losing their current visa status entirely.

Rule of thumb: If you plan to leave Thailand more than once during your current visa, the multiple permit (฿3,800) pays for itself after just the fourth trip compared to buying single permits each time.

How to Apply (Step-by-Step)

Go to an immigration office

Visit any Thai Immigration Office at least 1 day before your departure. Major airports also have counters — but apply there on the day of travel only as a last resort.

Complete the TM.8 form

Fill out the TM.8 re-entry permit application form. Available free at any immigration office or downloadable from the Immigration Bureau website.

Gather your documents

Bring your passport (original), one passport photo (4×6 cm), and your TM.6 departure card. Cash for payment — ฿1,000 (single) or ฿3,800 (multiple).

Submit and pay

Hand your documents to the officer. Pay the fee in cash. Processing takes 10–20 minutes at most offices.

Receive your permit stamp

The permit is stamped directly into your passport. Check the type (single/multiple) and your visa expiry date shown on the permit.

Travel with confidence

Your visa remains active when you re-enter Thailand. Present your passport at arrival immigration as normal. The permit is noted in the immigration system.

Airport option: Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Phuket, and Chiang Mai airports all have immigration counters before the departure hall. You can apply for a re-entry permit here on the day of travel — but allow at least 2–3 hours before your flight. Do not rely on this if your flight is tight.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Leaving Thailand without a permit

Your visa is automatically cancelled the moment you exit without a re-entry permit — regardless of how many days remain on your visa.

Applying at the airport too late

Airport immigration counters are an option, but if your flight is within 60–90 minutes, you may not have time. Apply at an office the day before whenever possible.

Confusing single with multiple entry

A single permit is cancelled after one use. If you plan to travel abroad again, you need to buy a new single permit — or get a multiple permit from the start.

Confusing re-entry permit with extension

A re-entry permit does not add days to your visa. It only protects your existing visa when you travel. Visa extension (via TM7 form) and re-entry permit are completely separate processes.
